3 Sustainable “Digital-Analog” Products You Should Try

It’s no surprise that global warming continues to rapidly affect everyday life on this planet. As we’re constantly reminded of it online, many of us face the challenge of affordably and accessibly finding ways to live and contribute more sustainably in today’s world. Sometimes, I even feel helpless when asking myself, “How I can make an impact?” I have since realized that a simple way is to start small by incorporating mindful habits into your lifestyle. By doing this, there’s potentially more commitment and longevity in these efforts that feel seamless.

I notice the constant need and dependencies that the modern world has come to, which leaves me to strongly feel that it’s important to sometimes take a step back from technology and retain key analog skills, such as physical reading and writing. With that in mind, I’ve consciously tried to balance my digital use and screen time with analog experiences. I truly enjoy analog devices when it comes to crafting or having hands-on experiences, especially when it comes to unplugging from technology and taking it slow. However, I am also mindful that some analog experiences may not be the most sustainable, especially when used excessively. I’ve recently discovered and incorporated these three modern digital devices designed to feel like retro analog products into my lifestyle, where I feel balanced. I’m happy to share these three sustainable products that you can try!

1. Poooli Print

for personalized crafting and journaling

If you’re someone like me who truly enjoys collaging and scrapbooking to elevate the journaling experience, this is an efficient and fun addition to your crafting toolkit. PoooliPrint is a pocket-size portable printer that doesn’t rely on ink and easily syncs to your devices via their app. A thermal printer, the PoooliPrint gives you an analog experience where you can print black-and-white images, text docs, and even hand-drawn designs directly from your phone! I love the simplicity of the prints because it gives me a retro and minimal aesthetic when incorporating my prints with my other stationery. Although it requires paper, the PoooliPrint reduces ink cartridge waste and energy-intensive printing processes. Since purchasing this at the time of writing, roughly eight months ago, I haven’t had to refill the paper supply yet. Added bonus, you can print stickers off the PoooliPrint, and the design is meant to be a parrot- too cute!

2. Camp Snap

for unlimited Kodak moments

As someone who loves photography, Kodak snapshots with my friends, and a Polaroid feel, the Camp Snap digital camera offers the perfect compromise of emitting an analog feeling without having to buy too many disposable cameras. Although I appreciate the endless opportunities of snapping photos on my smartphone, I admit I become overwhelmed at the 100+ snaps that I later filter through, especially when they all look so similar. I miss having the ease of a disposable camera where you effortlessly snap a photo, then build anticipation and excited to later get them printed.

Camp Snap is digital but mimics the nostalgia of an analog camera by omitting a display screen. As it contains an SD card, you can take as much as 2000 photos on the Camp Snap, whereas most disposable camera films limit you to 30. Plus, the output of the images have a grainy, retro aesthetic, which is nice. You can then access the images when plugging the device into your computer, which is faster, more affordable, and sustainable than printing your photos at the lab. Since it’s reusable, the Camp Snap eliminates, or at least reduces, the waste of single-use film and plastic, which I find is a solution to personally balance my use of analog and digital devices.

3. Rocketbook

for guilt-free, excess note-taking

I admit, I am one of those hyper-notetakers that produce chicken scratch and aimlessly jot my thoughts down in real-time. Then, when I review my notes, I can’t help but feel the need to actually tailor, structure and organize my notes. As much as I prefer handwriting my notes versus doing it online, I find that the Rocketbook, which is a reusable notebook that lets you scan and digitize handwritten notes, is another winning product. You use e-ink pens in these pages, scan the notes into your Rocketbook app via your smartphone camera, then wipe it all off with its included microfiber towel and a spritz of water. Voila! What’s also convenient is that you can organize, send, and format your digitized notes within the app, which makes for easier documentation. Using this product makes me feel less guilty when I take vigorous notes, especially during lectures or meetings because it helps replace using hundreds of wasted paper, thus supporting to reduce deforestation and transportation emissions.

These are just three examples from my personal experience that bring me the joy of a nostalgic and fun experience while enabling me to practice my digital habits more sustainably. Even more, these “digital-analog” products are a great way to promote a mindful way in consuming technology. I hope you enjoyed these suggestions and feel inspired to find small but impactful ways to live more sustainably!
